Solution to overcrowding

Keeping the limitations in mind the best idea that I am choosing which is also appropriate according to the situation is the idea of retractable chairs, which would replace the benches and would be more comfortable for the passengers. The chairs which would occupy the space only when a person is sitting on it. Thus creating a bit more space on the platforms.

ADVANTAGES OF RETRACTABLE CHAIRS
-Requires lesser apace as compared to the
  benches.
- Will be more in number, so more place to sit.
- A limited no. of crowd makes the platform
  more Systematic.

- New System- no one is allowed to get down at the platform before 60mins of
arrival/departure of trains (Till then the passengers are allowed to wait in the waiting rooms at the entrance)

Inspired from these kind of chairs.

Area of Concern

From the various opportunity areas as identified through the group work in phase 1. The design process I will follow for the phase 2 outcome. The design intervention outcome would probably be space styling for the customers i.e the passengers and the people of nizamuddin railway station. The material I will use would be either metal/wood, I will also apply the skills of joinery and all this would be for the purpose to solve the issue of overcrowding.
The issue of overcrowding is increasing day by day at the railway station specially during the peek seasons,
many a times situation arises that there is no place to walk ahead, people lying on the floors and their luggage, it becomes congested as well as suffocating for the people around. So there is an urge to solve the issue to maintain a systematic crowd at the railway station

Critical Parameters

There are various things that i observed during my research, they are as follows-

  • The back entrance of the railway station is overcrowded as there is no systematic entry for the crowd.
  • No facility of washrooms on the platforms except for platform no.1.
  • No ramp built so as to carry the heavy luggage easily.
  • There is a continuous flow of water from the tap which leads to great wastage of water.
  • No maintenance of the tracks, garbage lying every corner.
  • No precautions taken in case of emergency such as fire .
  • Proper seating is not available on any platforms as a result of which people are lying on the floor which makes the platform congested.
  • Local trains are overcrowded in such a way that there is no place to step inside.
  • Cleanliness of the trains are not appropriate.

Product culture

The products found at a railway station hold a great significance in completing that area as a whole. Without these, the railway station won’t function the same and also, every traveler can make use of them efficiently.

DUSTBINS
Dustbins are containers used for holding waste till they are disposed off. An effective way to keep the tracks and platforms clean, because railway stations welcome thousands of people everyday. Their cleanliness and hygiene is of utmost importance.

LCD SCREENS/MONITORS
The LCD screens on the platforms are connected to the main monitors. They help the passengers keep a track of their train’s timings. Also, announcements are made whenever a train is about to arrive at the platform.

TICKETS
A train ticket is a travel document valid for a single trip/journey between any 2 cities/states. Thousands of people travel by trains everyday and these tickets help the railways to keep a record of their daily transactions.
Also, those coming to see off their loved ones, need to purchase a platform ticket which adds up to the railway’s treasury.

BENCHES
Every railway platform’s basic necessity is to have benches and seats, so as to provide comfort to the passengers while they wait for their trains to arrive. The number of people waiting at the platform at any given point of time is much more than the seating capacity provided by the benches, and as a result many people resort to sitting on the floor to take rest.

LUGGAGE CARRIER

Wipe out the image of those fancy metal trolleys you see at the airports because the ones you will find at the railway stations are made up of wooden planks with wheels. And these trolleys carry parcels which are to be shipped from one city to another.

Visual Culture

Hazrat nizamuddin  railway station (NZM), a railway station which very well connects to almost every part of the country as it is considered among the big stations in India. It is located approximately 7 km to the north f.t. is managed by Northern railway zone of Indian railways.
To explore such a big place was a huge task and I have tried to sum up thing as better as I could.
The main motive behind making this station was to degrade the crowd at one single track i.e. New Delhi railway station.
To reduce the panic of carrying luggage it also has escalator but only at platform no.1. The waiting rooms are unhygienic that the crowd prefers to roam around instead of sitting over there, which do not even have washrooms. This causes the crowd all over the station, platform near ticket counter etc.
Lack of Hygiene is the biggest issue which I found over,  to control it,  they must at least have washrooms on every platform.
It is impossible to find a place which has only negative points. The best service I found over there was the travelling service provided to senior citizens and differently disabled people. Wheel chairs and battery vehicles run all around to serve them.
A lot more is needed to be taken care of by not constructing many new things but just by making the things better which are already present there.  Thus,  the strength and weakness I observed there was this. As architecturally its okay but functioning and servicing we need to work upon.

History

Rail transport in India is one of the most common modes of long-distance transport. Rail operations are largely run by a state-owned company, Indian Railways. The rail network traverses the length and width of the country, covering a total length of 63,140 km. it is said to be the 4th largest railways network in the world, transporting over 7 billion passengers and over 350 million tonnes of freight annually. Its operations cover twenty-five states and three union territories and also link the neighboring countries of Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Railways were introduced to India in 1853, and by the time of India’s independence in 1947 they had grown to forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit - Indian Railways – to form one of the largest networks in the world.

Hazrat nizamuddin station is located near the nazrat nizamuddin dargha, were the shrine of Hazrat Shaik Khwaja Syed Muhammad Nizameddin Auliya is located and therefore is also named after him. Hazrat Nizamuddin was a famous sufi saint of Chisthi order and believed in drawing close to god through renunciation of the world and service to humanity. Hazrat Nizamuddin was built to ease the congestion on New Delhi railway station and since then have been a key interchange station for trains headed to west and central India nearly 200 trains operate from the station, 44 of which originates or terminate there. The passenger’s footfall is more than two lakhs per day, many of them foreigners.

Introduction

hello everyone...

We the students of pearl academy are doing an indepth research on Nizamuddin railway station. our task involves observing the site, making thorough observations, identifying the various problems faced there and finally, as design students, provide viable solutions for the same. This would lead us to create and develop learner's sensitivity as a designer and then encourage us to take the responsibility in identifying issues faced by society and culture in macro and micro environment.
So here is a brief introduction to all the members of the 6-member team.
To understand the functioning and the fabric of the station, we have donned the hats of different stakeholders of the railway station.

Dipesh Kundnani - COOLIE
Kritika Saigal- PASSENGER
Nikita Ahuja- STALL OWNER
Udit Jain- TICKET SELLER
Sakshi Baghel- CANTEEN MANAGER
Gargi Gupta- FEMALE SECURITY

Coolie-Coolie is one of the most looked for individual at any railway station but also, he is the most ignored individual there. We hardly look at them. What we look at is a pair of steady hands and a head that carries piles of bags and trunks. And as luck would have it, we Indians still haven't heard the concept of travelling light. But is he really a sad, ignored head and hands or is there more to him. My research will focus on these key areas while I will look closely and understand how their life at the railway station is like. This journey will hopefully help me unravel some interesting facets here

Passenger-Passenger is the most important person on a railway station , it's like everything in that area had a purpose to only serve the passenger . After all in India alone, 8.397 billion passengers annually or more than 23 million passengers a day travel by trains to go to different cities for various different reasons . Passenger is the main asset of a railway station , as all the capital earned by the station itself as well as the stalls and vendors is because of them. My research will focus on these key areas while I will look closely and understand how their life for a particular time at the railways station is like . This journey of research will help me unravel many interesting facts some interesting facts here .

Stall owner- Imagine visiting a railway station and to your surprise, you see no stalls selling food & drinks or magazines & books. These stalls arise as a result of the demands of the primary stakeholders, i.e The passengers. They sell everything that the travelers would need while waiting at the platform or during their journey. Even though the sale of munchies and drinks boom due to increase in demand, our book stall owner's sale has gone downhill as technology has taken over papers these days.
So at my end, I will explore the lives of these stall owners and understand what ups and downs do they face in their daily struggles on the station's platform.

Ticket seller- Ticket seller is a person at railway stations who is responsible for selling tickets at ticket counter that require payment for entry. He is the first official you will meet at any railway station and also the most hardworking one. We know Indian railway network is the biggest railway network in the world. The ticket seller has to continuously sit there keeping track of those trains and selling tickets to respective people all day all night long. They face problems and my research will focus on them and some of their day to day problems understanding their life at railway station.

Canteen manager- The canteen manager at comesum cafe is one of the most influential individuals of the railway station. With such a big responsibility, his life is full of daily hassles from getting the ingredients to making sure that it reaches the passengers on  Train in time. He takes care of the food quality as he understands the morale associated with the consumption of food. My research on the social life of the canteen manager at the railway station will give me an insight to things further.

Female security- Between people rushing out without tickets and many more queuing to board a train, life of a security guard is difficult. It only gets tougher if the clients being dealt with are tired, hurrying women carrying toddlers and holding children. I will try and understand what goes on in the life of a female security guard between 6 a.m. when her shift starts to 9 p.m. after she calls it a day
